Many younger riders are familiar with road bikes and mountain bikes, but know little about cyclocross bikes. To many here in the US, cyclocross bikes look very much like road bikes, so what the heck makes them different? Good Question. The short and sweet of it is that cyclocross bikes are built for on and off road racing, popularized in Europe, these bikes are a hybrid of road bikes and mountain bikes. Bikes like the Bianchi Volpe utilize similar geometry to standard performance road bikes, but use stronger and tougher components. In many cases also the frames are stronger than their regular road bike counterparts. Their tires are wider and have more treat to accomodate a comfortable ride on an uneven dirt road as well as on the sometimes bumpy and uneven streets of any big city. Cyclo-Cross bikes are considered safer than regular road bikes because of it's wider tires and rims and the addtion of disc brakes which brake better.
