Supplements for Boosting Cyclists Health and Performance

Aug 10th 2018

Most cyclists do it for the love of the ride and road. Many of us do it for a healthy lifestyle. In addition to working on your physical side, we should always be conscious of what's going on inside our bodies. Eating a balanced meal 3 times a day that supplies the ideal amount of required vitamins and minerals is quite challenging for many of us with an active career and family life. In case you're not getting everything you need from the foods you're eating, there are options. Here are some supplements that you might want to look into to enhance your health and performance.

This is not medical advice, we are not medical professionals, and you should always consult your doctor and/or  medical professional(s) before making changes to your health and/or body.

Whey Protein

Whey protein is great because you can measure exactly how much protein you're taking in, and especially if you're a vegetarian or vegan, this is a great way for you to get the protein that you're not getting from eating meats. Protein drinks are often used to boost energy or as a meal replacement. There are many types of protein supplements, but whey protein has the essential amino acids that aid in muscle recovery - perfect for both endurance cyclists and sprinters' muscle wear and tear.

Creatine

Creatine is used mainly to give the body strength and power. Creatine is in most red meats and salmon. For the non meat eaters, you can still get creatine through supplements. Take note, if you already eat foods that are high in creatine, you may not need the additional supplement, or your body will not respond to additional creatine.

Electrolytes

What are "electrolytes"? They are salts and minerals: sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphate and bicarbonate. These salts and minerals are excreted from the body through sweat and urine. You need to replenish with supplements and many sports drinks provide a great balance while hydrating you. Electrolyte powders are recently gaining more popularity. Make sure you are taking in a beverage high in electrolytes but low in sugar.

Fish Oil

A must have supplement for cyclists, definitely recommended even if you're not very active. Fish oil is beneficial for its Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. If you already have low blood pressure, consult your doctor first. Fish oil helps to lower blood pressure and has been shown to prevent and manage heart disease.

Multivitamin

THE must have for all cyclists. It is an almost insurmountable feat to get all of your daily recommended values of vitamins and minerals every single day, every week, year round. If you're going to prioritize which supplements to take, Multivitamins should be at the top of your list. Overall, a quality multivitamin should give you the vitamins and minerals you lack as well as help your body function better.
