5 High Tech Cycling Gadgets You'll Love or Hate

May 18th 2018

A huge part of the fun in being a cyclist is the accessories. The pragmatist in us wants to say "just ride, all you need is your bike and the open road". Accessories can amplify your bike experience, also we just love gadgets and new  toys. Here's 10 we've ranked as interesting and some that weren't for us.

Solar Powered Bike Lock

This bike lock says it can send you an alert you if your bike is disturbed, locks and unlocks automatically or with a tap of your phone, and is self-charging with its built-in solar panel that automatically charges the battery. $200

We say: Interesting

 Hövding Invisible Bike Helmet

According to the brand's website, "When activated, Hövding records the cyclist’s movements 200 times a second. In the event of an accident, the cyclist’s abnormal movement is detected and the airbag inflates." Using sensors and algorithms, this Swedish company claims that their helmet will inflate from a helium gas inflator to protect the wearer if it senses anything out of the ordinary. This is an interesting idea, but we still wholeheartedly advise wearing the traditional hard shell bicycle safety helmet. Upwards of $350

Zackees Turn Signal Gloves

Not all drivers remember hand turn signals. You're supposed to know them for your drivers license test but "use it or lose it" proves true too often for many drivers. These gloves fix that problem while also providing extra visibility and hand protection. $55

We say: Super interesting

Garmin Varia Rearview Radar Tail Light

This techy tail light warns cyclists of vehicles approaching from behind (up to 153 yards). This is for people who miss rear view mirrors when cycling. $200

We say: Not for us

Powertap P1 Meter Pedals

These are for power cyclists. These pedals measure your pedaling cadence and torque and calculate this data to help you train into the most effective cyclist you can. This will also help in fitness and pinpointing what you need to do to get specific results. The only downside? It's $800 for the pair.

We Say: Super interesting and we'll revisit when we win the lottery.
